What is a CV cover letter or covering letter?
The simple answer is that a CV cover letter or covering letter is a letter of introduction sent out by job seekers along with their CV / resume or application form to potential employers. A CV cover letter for a job should explain the suitability of the candidate for the post.

Why send a CV cover letter?
As we have said, a covering letter is a means of introduction. Sometimes an employer will invite you to include a letter along with an application form, CV or resume as part of the recruitment process. Many employers use written cover letters as a method of screening out applicants who lack necessary basic skill or have not demonstrated in writing that they are sufficiently interested in the position. Remember that the recruitment process can be a lengthy and costly process, so an employer will only interview those who have impressed. Types of cover letter
Cover letters are typically divided into three categories:
- The application form covering letter
- The invited cover letter which responds to an advertised or known job vacancy
- The speculative cover letter or uninvited covering letter which inquires about possible positions
- The networking letter which requests information and assistance in the sender’s job search
