Have you ever felt like your life has grown stale? I know that I definitely have. It has usually been when I didn’t feel like I was doing anything new. I didn’t see things improving.
Today I am going to talk about how to avoid this, and the importance of becoming a better person.
Who am I and why should you listen? Good Question
In case you don’t know who I am, my name is JR Cook and I am a philosopher. I am originally from California, and am currently abroad traveling the world to broaden my worldview.
I author my own works through books, and study the works of philosophers throughout history to develop what works best practically.
I share all of this for free on my website, except for the books obviously. I have spent my life in constant pursuit of Truth and Wisdom.
How to Become a Better Person
I have spent my life trying to become a better person, but I used to think that it was a destination.
I am now convinced that being a good person is a journey. It is a journey that requires dedication, and consistent exercise.
You can follow me on my journey by listening to my philosophy website.
If You Don’t Use It, You Lose It
It is similar to how if a person lies in bed for 2 weeks, their body will begin to atrophy. When you are not exercising your virtues, your character begins to erode.
That is where personal development comes in. I believe it to be one of the most important elements of life, because it is the foundation that everything else rests on.
Think about it, if I begin to let my morals slip, what kind of a friend, father, or lover would I have the capacity to be?
What kind of a role model am I for others to emulate? What kind of a philosophy would I have?
Becoming A Better Person Takes More Than Knowing, It Takes Action
That is why I have been consistently engaged in personal development daily for many years now. Obviously as a philosopher, I would know intellectually what a good person was, but before doing personal development, sometimes I wouldn’t embody it.
What good is knowledge without taking action to implement it? It might feel good to “know” the right thing to do, but it feels even better doing the right thing.
The Two Types Of People
If you pay attention to the world, you will notice two types of people. The first type are those who will not speak on a topic if their wisdom empowers them to provide accurate knowledge.
Those are usually those who spend their days learning, pursuing truth, and taking action. They are philosophers, and they are the ones who value learning, personal development and growth
Then you have the second class (which does most of the talking). These are those who don’t pursue truth, but are willing to give you their opinion on it anyway.
They do their thinking with their emotions. I call them the confused and deceived class, and they are to be pitied . They are not to be mocked or ridiculed.
They are in desperate need of being led to the light. The only challenge is you can’t force them. People only come around when they are ready, and some never do at all.
So What Can We Do Moving Forward?
The reason I am writing this article at PD Cafe is for a specific reason. Today I would like to invite you to be a part of the Philosopher Class of the world.
The people here at The Personal Development Cafe are very gracious to have me here. I ask that you check back often and see my articles related to how to join the philosopher class of society through consistent personal development.
If you want to start today, something that you can do to improve your character would be to get clear on what an ideal character is to you.
Write up a list of traits that the ultimate human being possesses. These will be your targets.
Choose the most important one, and do your best to embody it today.
Put it on like a new pair of shoes, and walk around with it.
Until next time, keep growing.
