The UAE is a federation of seven emirates (equivalent to principalities), each governed by a hereditary emir, with a single national president. The two most well known states probably are Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The modern emirate of Dubai was created after the UK left the area in 1971.
UAE oil reserves are ranked as the world’s sixth-largest and it possesses one of the most developed economies in West Asia. A massive construction boom, an expanding manufacturing base, and a thriving services sector are helping the UAE diversify its economy.
The United Arab Emirates has a diverse and multicultural society. Most Emirati males prefer to wear a kandura, an ankle-length white tunic woven from wool or cotton, and most Emirati women wear an abaya, a black over-garment covering most parts of the body. Western-style clothing is, however, dominant because of the large expatriate population, and this practice is beginning to grow in popularity among Emiratis.
The largest city within the emirate is in Dubai and is also named Dubai. Dubai’s Jebel Ali port, constructed in the 1970s, has the largest man-made harbour in the world and was ranked seventh globally for the volume of container traffic it supports. Dubai is also a hub for service industries such as information technology and finance.
As of 2010, Dubai was the 8th most visited city of the world. Dubai is expected to accommodate over 15 million tourists by 2015.
Dubai has been called the “shopping capital of the Middle East”. Dubai alone has more than 70 shopping malls, including the world’s largest shopping mall, Dubai Mall. The city draws large numbers of shopping tourists from countries within the region and from as far as Eastern Europe, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent.
