What format should you use for your Social Worker CV / Resume?

As with any CV or resume, the first thing you should do is decide how you are going to use your CV / resume.  Are you going to target a specific role?  If so then you should use a targeted CV / resume format that you can tailor your Social Worker CV to for post for which you are applying.

If you are using a speculative approach and sending out your Social Worker CV / resume to various prospective employers a chronological CV / resume layout may be more suitable.  When using a chronological CV or resume format you should provide at least 10 years employment history.

The duties of a Social Worker can be wide ranging.  Your role may be anything from working with vulnerable young children, people with mental health issues to assisting the elderly in their own homes.

Your Social Worker CV / resume must highlight your experience, ability to perform under stressful situations, with vulnerable and diverse client groups.  Your CV or resume should provide examples of:

  • Management and leadership skills
  • Your ability to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively
  • Your areas of expertise – Court work / Report writing / Counselling / Children and Families / Mental health / Offenders etc.
  • Qualifications – both academic and professional.
  • Achievements and awards
  • Any police or required certification / licenses (i.e. Criminal Records Bureau approved).

Working for Anytown Social Services Family and Children’s Services department, I managed a case load of clients.   I would have to assess and support their physical safety, emotional education and social well-being.  Many of the children were on the ‘at risk register’ and were very vulnerable.  I would often have to visit the homes of these children, so a tactful and gentle approach was vital, whilst ensuring that no detail was missed.  The need to provide urgent or emergency responses to cases was paramount.
