Skills and qualities to be highlighted on your Carpenter CV / resume

As a Carpenter or Joiner you will need to highlight qualities and skills that show you are passionate about carpentry. Illustrate that you have a good knowledge of woods and experience with a variety of tools that you may be expected to work with. You should also show that you have a good eye for detail, able to follow and work with plans.

Include action words that highlight these skills and qualities in your personal profile and reinforce this by giving examples both in the Key Skills section and also under Duties in the Employment Summary section of your CV / resume.

Skills and experience that you should highlight include:

  • First fixing experience (fitting wooden structures, such as floors, roof timbers, roof joists, window and door frames, staircases and partition walls)
  • Second fixing experience (installing skirting boards, door surrounds, doors, door handles and locks, as well as cupboards and shelving,
  • The ability to follow technical drawings and plans
  • Relevant Qualifications / training
  • Maths (ability to calculate materials required etc.)
  • The ability to work as both part of a team and unsupervised
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations

It is important to remember that as a carpenter or joiner you may be required to work away from home, or for long, unsociable hours in order to complete deadlines. On some contracts you may have to work on scaffolding, roofs or up ladders. You may need to work outdoors in all kinds of weather so make sure you let potential employers know you are physically fit.

Most important of all, your carpenter CV / resume should be a reflection of you, so we strongly suggest you use this as a template and not simply copy it.
