If you want to lose weight and burn body fat there are foods which can make that harder and foods which can speed up the process. Ideally, aim to eat foods in their most natural state.
Sadly many processed and inorganic foods contain pesticides, chemicals and hormones which can slow down your metabolism. They will work against you achieving your weight loss goals. Instead look to eat natural, wild and organic foods as much as possible as they are ‘cleaner’ and can aid weight loss.
Here are my top tips for fat burning foods:
Metabolism boosting foods for weight loss
Grapefruits
Grapefruits contain enzymes which are shown to help release body fat, regulate blood sugar and reduce food cravings. Their enzymes also aid digestion. The healthier your digestion is, the easier it is to lose weight. Simply eat half a grapefruit at the start of any meal to take advantage of its benefits.
Avocados
Avocados are packed with many health benefits. They provide plenty of healthy fats, which not only help keep cholesterol levels within a healthy range, they keep you feeling fuller for longer, reduce cravings and can burn off body fat.
Avocados are great added to salads and made into guacamole, but they’re also brilliant added to smoothies and desserts such as chocolate mousses. I make a raw dessert from a scoop of protein powder, some avocado, raw almond milk and pistachio nuts all blended together; it’s healthy and delicious!
Good Quality Protein
Protein is vital in order to cause your body to hold onto its lean muscle tissue, which fuels your metabolism. Where possible, and where your budget allows, eat organic meats from grass fed animals, and wild fish (especially salmon). Eat organic eggs and dairy too.
Avoid grain fed animals and farmed fish to ensure you avoid eating any hormones or antibiotics fed to inorganic animals and farmed fish; these can be absorbed into your body and cells. Not only are they unnatural chemicals (some would call them poisons) which the body is unable to process, they can also slow down your metabolism.
This is all about eating foods in their most natural state so that we achieve and function in our most natural state.
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Use this when cooking as it is shown to resist heat-induced damage; other oils are susceptive to oxidative damage which is damaging to our health.
Coconut oil is shown to stimulate the metabolism, aid digestion, support your immune system, help your skin stay healthy and support thyroid gland function. Eating just a teaspoon a day can boost fat burning!
Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
Raw organic apple cider vinegar is shown to stimulate the metabolism and cleanse the internal organs. Use it to make a salad dressing with some fresh herbs and lemon juice.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is known to regulate your blood sugar, which helps support fat burning. It has many other health benefits including helping to lower cholesterol and preventing against unhealthy blood clots.
This fragrant spice is really versatile and can be used in savoury and sweet recipes. It’s delicious sprinkled onto yoghurt with fruit and added to smoothies. Add a stick of fresh cinnamon root to a cup of hot water and allow it to infuse before drinking.
My favourite is to add it to cooked fruit, and top with a healthy crumble made from ground almonds, crushed nuts and seeds and coconut oil. That’s real healthy comfort food!
