Have you heard about the Law of Attraction?
Whether you have discovered it by watching The Secret movie or read about it in articles, there is one question that is regularly asked. Does the Law of Attraction work?
Does The Law of Attraction Work?
The Law of Attraction has been praised by many successful people as important aspect in achieving their dreams. Famous people such as Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, Jim Carey, Will Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger and others have stated that they use the Law of Attraction.
If so many influential people believe in it, just what is The Secret and how does the Law of Attraction work?
The Secret’ or ‘The Law of Attraction’ basically states that whatever you think about you bring about and that you can be, do or have anything in your life that you so wish. The process is as simple as:
- Ask
- Believe
- Receive
There are of course people who firmly believe that, yes the secret works and can see it in the world around them. Then there are those who think it is an absolute non-sense.
So let’s take a look at a couple of the common arguments against ‘The Secret’ and see what sense we can make of it.
Does The Law of Attraction Work?
Argument 1: If ‘The Secret’ really works and it is as simple as we are told in the movie, then how come so many people claim they cannot get it to work for them?
That is a fair argument. However, whilst ‘The Secret’ is a simple process, it does still require a fair bit of discipline to implement it properly.
For example, first you have got to know what you want. This can actually be a huge stumbling block for many. How many people if you ask them what they want out of life will straight away be able to give you a specific answer?
In fact why don’t you make a point this week of asking a few of your friends what they want out of life. Or even what they want from the next six months. The chances are that very few of them will have anything other than a vague notion of what they want and desire.
When you were a child on your birthday I’m sure you were always very careful to make sure you told your parents exactly what you wanted.
Chances are you probably knew what make of trainer you wanted, including colour and size. You probably even imagined how it would feel to wear and play in those trainers.
That is the clarity that you need, that is how specific your desire needs to be. Simply saying I want a new job or more money or other similar statements just isn’t going to cut it.
So, this argument against the secret is already showing signs of weakness. Let’s dig a little deeper. The second step ‘Believe’.
Lets assume you do have a crystal clear goal similar to the child above of exactly what you want, now the next potential problem is believing.
People can have a goal but if that is not backed up with belief then it is just a dream or a wish. The problem is that ‘The Secret’ implies that you can be, do or have ANYTHING and yes that is true…however you can only have it, if you believe that you can have it first.
If you desire a million dollars cash and you are really clear about that and have been visualizing this specifically, but you do not really believe that your goal can come true for you – then the process will not work.
The trick around this then is to choose a goal that is something you CAN believe in. Something big but not too big, something that you feel is at least within your grasp.
Once you have decided upon a goal like this, then you can believe in it, genuinely from the core of your being. This will allow you to go to the next step.
‘Receiving’ is step three but once more it is not as easy as it sounds. Assuming the above steps have been taken so far then something must come of it. But in fact the word ‘receiving’ is a bit misleading.
It sort of implies that your goal will just materialize out of thin air and appear in your post box or on your kitchen table. Well if that is how you feel then I’m afraid you are going to be disappointed.
The ‘receiving’ part can be in the form of an opportunity, an idea, a person or a thing. In fact it could be a myriad of things which all require some effort on your part.
You have to do some work and fulfill your side of the bargain. You very rarely get something for nothing in life. A price always has to be paid. This is the part which tends to get glossed over by a lot of marketing people and gurus and can be very misleading.
Effort is still required on your part and often persistent effort over a period of time. However, once you come to terms with manifesting your dreams, the process will work and it will work very efficiently if all the above steps are followed.
Once you discover the Law of Attraction, finding out how to develop the positive attitude you need to succeed will make your journey to success easier.
Does The Secret Work?
Argument 2: I am quite sure the people affected by natural disasters didn’t want to be affected by them. How do you explain that in terms of ‘The Secret’ and ‘The Law of Attraction’?
This is a very difficult point to deal with and is a strong argument against the secret process. It’s highly unlikely that anybody effected by natural disasters desired for them to happen.
Instead they probably desired for their lives to improve and the lives of their children to improve. That is what I imagine those people were desiring before those tragic events.
If that is the case and I think it is a safe bet that they collectively were desiring a better future, then we have to remember that the universe knows the fastest way to get from A to B and it always works with the laws of nature and for the greater good, even if at first that may not seem the case.
In years to come a disaster might be looked back upon as a turning point. It maybe that as a result of the tragedies that in the long run in the years ahead great strides and improvements are made in those areas effected, in things like infrastructure, housing, schooling; because of the damage done to them they may be built back to a much improved level then there pre-disaster state thus improving the lives of so many people.
In this way, even through tragedy we can still see the law of attraction process in action.
How Does The Law of Attraction Work?
Argument 3: I have tried using the Law of Attraction but I don’t see any changes in my life or financial situation
This has to be one of the most common reasons that people who believe that the Secret does not work will give. As previously said, the Law of Attraction states that whatever you think about you bring about.
There is a very popular saying “Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it!” If you are constantly doubting or filling your head with negative thoughts; surely that is what you are asking the Universe to deliver? Then you shouldn’t be surprised if that is what you attract.
What you have to do is change your thinking patterns. If you want to change your financial situation, instead of thinking “I would like to win the lottery, but I know I won’t.” Think of a specific that you can achieve and do everything in your power to make that dream manifest itself.
So in answer to the question ‘Does the Law of Attraction work?’ a few arguments have been displayed for and against.
You may agree or disagree with what was said. You can take it or leave it, however if you believe the secret works and are willing to follow the stages through with persistence then you will find success.
On the other hand if you don’t believe the secret works and you try to use it, then of course don’t be surprised when you don’t receive your desires. Either way your beliefs will have been fulfilled….funny that!
If you want to make the Law of Attraction work for you, change your way of thinking and you’ll change your life.
Hi The PD Cafe.
Great article and enjoyable to read.
However, a few points to note:
“‘Receiving’ is step three but once more it is not as easy as it sounds. Assuming the above steps have been taken so far then something must come of it. But in fact the word ‘receiving’ is a bit misleading.
It sort of implies that your goal will just materialize out of thin air and appear in your post box or on your kitchen table. Well if that is how you feel then I’m afraid you are going to be disappointed.”
This statement appears to be inaccurate in regards to the law of attraction.
There are many recorded instances where things have literally manifested out of thin air, and peoples desires have appeared in their post box or similar.
I can give a perfect example of this:
A few years ago my partner at the time and I needed some money for household things.
That need was somewhat urgent as it included nappies for our 1 year old, at the time.
We sat down and worked out on our computer exactly how much was needed to the nearest penny and it came to approximately £40.
We had a few people we could ask for the money, but we decided we would challenge ourselves a little and exercise some independence.
We agreed that as the man of the house I would go out and find something to do to raise the required amount.
With that settled, I got my coat and opened the front door.
BOOM!
There outside our front door was £40!!!
There were 2 £20 notes wrapped together, right there outside on the ground, immediately in front of our front door.
I looked up the road and down the road, but there was no one there!
The £40 was right there, in front of our house, exactly when we needed it.
The reason we had manifested that, was because we were confident that we were going to receive it.
We also had A VERY SPECIFIC AMOUNT and A CLEAR REASON why we wanted it and what it would be used for.
Here’s one more:
The same partner and I were going to work one day.
We were working together on a project and had to travel several miles from home to get to the job site.
For whatever reason, we were a little short on funds and needed a £10 top up to ensure we would have no problems financially, throughout the day.
We made a quick phone call to one of our friends who lived a short walk from our house and he said, “sure no problem come and collect it now”.
We left the house and started to walk to his house.
On our way there, we found £10!
Another example:
I run a website called The Natural Health Dictionary.
It’s a health website covering health related issues and remedies.
A few weeks ago, I wanted the site to have a facility were people could read the site in their own language.
Within a couple of days, I had found an easily affordable service that far exceeded my expectations.
The company that provided the service were very good to me and even programmed the website for me to read out loud the website in any language too!
You can see an example of how that works here:
So yes, one of the examples above shows that desires can be fulfilled with even a minimum of effort.
(Doing a search on Google and then filling in a form on a website.)
The others show that having a clear and specific desire is sometimes all that is needed for things to DROP RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU INSTANTANEOUSLY.
Here is a good video that explains how this all works:
Hi Cliff,
Thank you for your informative comments. Your examples really do highlight how the Law of Attraction can work.
Wishing you all the success for the future.
