Caring for a loved one

Do you wonder how you are going to cope if a family member needs caring for? Sometimes you may feel that you are alone, have no-one to turn to and just don’t know how to cope. That does not have to be the way.

Caring for a loved one and coping with bereavement

by Anna

My name is Anna. After caring for my mother for many years I finally lost her to cancer. I know what it is like to go through the good times and surface out of the darkness. I coped with raising my three children whilst caring for my mother and I have emerged through all of this with the love of my children and grandchildren. I know that I can offer support and empathy to others who need someone to turn to.

The thing with caring for a loved one is that you have to remain optimistic even when things get you down. You often feel guilty if you are not strong for your loved one – even when it is very difficult. It is as though expressing doubts is a sin. This often means that you are left in an entirely new yet just as stressful situation when your loved one is no longer there.

Coping with bereavement is something personal. Even if in our hearts we were expecting the outcome, the reality can be traumatic. The thing is we all react differently. Nobody has the right to tell you how you should react, but it is so comforting and helpful to have someone who is prepared to listen and who has experienced what you are going through.

I do not claim to be a professional coach – that is not why I am willing to talk to you if you need support. I have been there and know what you are going through.

When I found the Personal Development Cafe I thought this might be a place where I could meet and help those who needed a friendly supportive chat. If you would like to leave me a message in the comments form below and I will always try my best to answer as soon as possible.
