How to Become an Effective Business Leader and Build a Successful Team

Team First, Me Second
You have most likely heard the phrase, “never let them see you sweat” quite a few times in throughout your life. This expression is used often in the business world. It is frequently said that if you plan to become an effective leader, you must learn how to make it all look easy. No matter if you are leading a presentation or delivering an important speech, you need to be able to get your audience to pay attention to your presentation or speech and not focus on you.
On the contrary, however, if you truly want to become an effective leader and an expert in your industry, you need to let them see you sweat just a little, or at least partake in a little heavy lifting. This will let your subordinates know that you see yourself as part of the group not above it. This does not mean that you should micromanage or do the work for others; it just means that you need to be in tuned with your team.
Everyone wants to know that someone believes in him or her. When someone does a job well, it is important for you as a leader to acknowledge the achievements of both the individual as well as the team. When you provide this type of support and praise, you will effectively build up the confidence of your team members. When times are especially tough, it is the purpose of the leader to cheer the team through it. It is the leader’s job to remind the members of the team just what they are capable of getting done.
A truly effective leader understands that they really accomplish very little on their own. Instead of taking all of the credit when things go right, a good leader will aim the limelight toward those who have done their best and accomplished great things. Remember that no matter how much you may love your job, work is still work. It is appropriate to focus your attention on the work, but is also important to pay attention to those who are doing the work as well. This is the most efficient way to get things done when you have ambitious goals that you want to reach that require spending long hours at work and paying close attention to the project at hand. When tough situations arise, leaders may need to change up the pace of things. When your team works long hours, buy them lunch or send them on a relaxing retreat. It is also important to keep a good sense of humor throughout the entire project.
Let your team know that you are a real person just like them. Tell them a little about yourself and your objective. Show your team that you have a heart and let them know that you care. You are not expected to socialize and fraternize with your team, but you do need to treat them like they are people. Take the time to ask about their family or just how they are doing. Many people prefer to keep their private lives private. A good leader will be able to recognize the difference and act appropriately according to any boundaries that are set by the individual team member. No matter what, you must be accessible to your team. It is important that you help out with the work, keep in constant contact with the members of your team and help your team reach its goals successfully any way you can.
